WCCS 3K - 1st race of the season!

Sunday was my first official race of 2008 and it was a pretty good one. A 3K is 1.86 miles and I ran it in 15:07 for an 8:07 pace, which is not too bad for me on a trail. I ran this race last year in 15:27 and one of my goals was to improve from last year and I think 20 seconds in such a short race is great. Perfectly fine with me!

I forgot how fast this race is. It takes place at Overton Park and the start is in a field. So everyone basically sprints the first 200 yds then the course takes a sharp right and starts to eventually head into a single track trail. So if you want a good position in the single track, you literally better sprint as fast as you can. Last year I got caught behind some kids and it sucked. But I had a decent start - I got behind this girl I know who is fast and tried to stay with her for the first part and I did an okay job, but then I had to let her go. Then I just focused on my race and finishing as strong as possible. My official time is 15:07 but when I crossed the line in the chute finish the clock said 15:04, so I'm not sure how that works. An improvement is an improvement!

Next up is the Swampstomper 25K on Sunday, so this week I'm just going to run about 20-25 miles then see what I can do at the race. It should be interesting because today I googled the race and found some interesting descriptions of it. I'll talk about those another day.

Happy running!

  1. What's up fatso? Haven't seen you in a while. Can't wait to see ya at the Swamper on Sunday, you're gonna do great. Drew gave me the 411 on all your running news during our long run this past weekend, sounds like you're back in the saddle!!! Glad to see it. Looks like the Memphis Ultra team has a lot going on in 2008. I don't know who thought of starting it, but Patrick is a damn genious!!!!

  3. I thought you were supposed to sprint at the start of any length race. Have I been doing something wrong? That's the way I roll. It's not right but I'm the guy who pays the consequences.

Have fun at the Swampstomper! Can't wait to hear your description of the course and events along the way. Do they have Swamp Buggy's for Aid Stations?

Michelle and I are running the Capitol Peak Fat Ass this weekend. Michelle is doing the Half-Ass which is 17 miles and I'm doing the full monty 34 mile run. The course had to be changed due to heavy snow load at the peak and a couple of bridges that are on the brink of being washed out.

I see some running bloggers are getting ready to taper for the Rocky Racoon 100 in Texas. I think it's on the first weekend of February. Too damn early for a 100 miler!

BTW- Thanks for your comment regarding my father. He's home and feeling stonger every day. His passion is flying and he really wants to get healthy, pass his physical, and get back up in the air in his plane.

I can't believe Patrick called you fat... just by appearence it looks like he is slightly bigger than you. maybe it's just his nose. Ha! later
